Understanding Hong Kong Stock Codes and Board Lots

Use the correct HKEX security code, identify vendor suffixes, and calculate order size using the security's current board lot.

Stock-code formats

Hong Kong securities are identified by numeric stock codes. Data providers may pad codes with leading zeroes and append an exchange suffix.

Leading-zero formatting and the .HK suffix can vary by platform. Match the issuer and instrument description, not only the displayed string.

How board lots affect an order

A board lot is the standard trading unit assigned to a security. The number of shares per lot can differ between securities and may change after corporate actions.

Estimated order value = share price x shares per board lot x number of lots

Broker fees, levies, taxes, currency conversion, and odd-lot execution can change the final amount.

Before placing or comparing an order

  1. Confirm the exact security code and instrument type.
  2. Look up the current board-lot size using HKEX or your broker.
  3. Check whether your intended quantity is a board lot or odd lot.
  4. Account for Hong Kong dollar pricing and transaction costs.
  5. Review recent splits, consolidations, and other corporate actions.
